✅ What Is Chickenpox?
Chickenpox, which is also referred to as Varicella, is a viral disease that is highly contagious and is brought about by the Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV).
It is predominant among children; however, adults may also acquire it in case they are not vaccinated or have not been infected.
Chickenpox is characterised by an itchy red rash and blisters with fluid and fever, and exhaustion.
⭐ Causes of Chickenpox
Chickenpox can be spread from person to person via:
Aerosol from sneezing or coughing of an infected individual.
Physical contact with chickenpox blisters fluid.
Polluted objects (infrequently).
When one is infected, the virus continues to stay in the body and may re-activate later as shingles (herpes zoster).
⭐ Who Is at Risk?
Unvaccinated children aged below 12.
Adults who did not have chicken pox or the vaccination.
Pregnant women (danger to the mother and the infant)
Individuals who have low body defences.
⭐ Symptoms of Chickenpox
The symptoms are typically observed 10-21 days following exposure, and they include:
🔹 Early Symptoms
Fever
Fatigue or irritability
Loss of appetite
Headache
🔹 Rash Development
First, red spots are seen and are frequently located on the chest, back, and face.
Spots develop into blisters (vesicles), which are fluid-filled.
Due to bursting blisters, they develop crusts or scabs.
The rash can extend to the whole body, even the scalp and mouth.
🔹 Other Symptoms
Itching (can be severe)
Mild sore throat or cough
Uncommon complications: bacterial dermatitis, pneumonia, encephalitis.
⭐ Complications (Rare)
Though chickenpox is mild in children, it may result in severe complications in:
Adults → pneumonia, hepatitis
Pregnant women → birth defect or disease in the newborn.
Immunocompromised individuals -severe or chronic disease.
⭐ Diagnosis
Chickenpox may be diagnosed by:
Rash and blisters are observed.
History (recent exposure, vaccination status) Medical history.
Blood tests (on rare occasions, under exceptional circumstances),
⭐ Treatment
Chickenpox is self-limiting and mild in most cases and takes up to 510 days. Therapy is aimed at symptom alleviation:
🔹 Home Care
Wash the skin and keep nails short to avoid being infected.
Oatmeal or cool baths in order to decrease itching.
Itch Calamine lotion or antihistamines.
Drink plenty of fluids
Rest
🔹 Medications
High-risk patients can be prescribed antiviral medication (acyclovir).
Antipyretics such as acetaminophen (do not use aspirin in children)
⭐ Prevention
The varicella vaccine is very effective and should be used in children and immunodeficient adults.
Do not be in close contact with the infected persons.
Hygiene: hand washing, do not share personal stuff.
⭐ Prognosis
The majority of children get back without any problems.
The immune formation typically takes place following an infection or vaccination.
A virus can also stay in nerves, which can re-awaken later as shingles.
