✅ What Is Mumps?
Mumps is a viral disease that is transmissible and is caused by the mumps virus, which belongs to the paramyxovirus family.
It is mainly the salivary glands being affected, in particular the parotid glands, which are found close to the jaw, resulting in swelling.
Mumps is not exclusive to children and adolescents; adults may be infected.
⭐ Causes of Mumps
Mumps is transmitted between individuals in the following way:
Coughing/ sneezing respiratory droplets.
Direct or respiratory secretions contact.
Contaminated surfaces (rare)
The virus is extremely contagious, 25 days before the onset and 5 days following the onset of swelling of the salivary glands.
⭐ Symptoms of Mumps
The symptoms typically manifest 1618 days after the exposure, and they may include:
🔹 Early Symptoms:
Fever
Headache
Muscle aches
Fatigue
Loss of appetite
🔹 Salivary Gland Symptoms:
Both sides (or either side) of the parotid glands show swelling and tenderness.
Suffering from chewing or swallowing.
Cheeks or jaw Puffiness.
🔹 Other Possible Symptoms:
Earache
Sore throat
Mild abdominal pain
Uncommon complications (more prevalent in adults):
Orchitis (testicle swelling)
Oophoritis (ovary swelling)
Meningitis or encephalitis
Hearing loss (rare)
⭐ Diagnosis
Mumps is normally diagnosed through:
Physical (swollen parotid glands) examination.
History (exposure to contaminated individual, vaccination history) Medical history (exposure to contaminated person, vaccination status)
Blood tests (demonstrate the presence of antibodies against the mumps virus)
PCR tests (in rare cases, to identify viral genetic material)
⭐ Treatment of Mumps
Mumps does not have any particular antiviral therapy. The management is accommodating and aims at alleviating symptoms and avoiding complications.
🔹 Home and Symptomatic Care
Rest and adequate sleep
Drink plenty of fluids,
eat soft food to soothe the ache of chewing.
Swollen glands should have warm or cold compresses.
Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen to treat fever and pain (do not use aspirin in children)
🔹 Medical Care
Observe complications like orchitis, meningitis or encephalitis.
Hospitalisation is seldom required, but is required in severe cases.
Self-quarantine to avoid the spread of infection for at least 5 days after swelling.
⭐ Prevention
The effectiveness of the Mumps vaccine (MMR: Measles, Mumps, Rubella) is very high.
Two courses are to be taken: 1215 months and 46 years.
An infected person should not be in close contact.
Frequently wash hands and cover mouth/nose on sneezing or coughing.
Clean surfaces to avoid the spreading of viruses.
⭐ Prognosis
The majority of people recover fully after 2 weeks.
The immunity is normally acquired following the infection or vaccination.
The complications are severe, but not common and should occur in vaccinated people.
